Antique Pig’s Head Shaving Mug circa 1904 Bavaria

This antique shaving mug was created in the form of what looks to be a pig’s head with tusks, or a boar’s head.

It was created by Frank B. Clock, as part of a collection of approximately 30 varieties of animal head shaving mugs between 1892-1917 in Bavaria.

The snout of this pig is open for the brush to be inserted and moistened with the water inside the body of the mug.

Shaving mugs became popular in Germany between the 1860’s through the early 1900’s, and many were exported to the United States. During the earlier part of that period, shaving brushes were much narrower, and would easily slip into the opening in this mug.

The top of the pig’s head would hold the soap, with five drainage holes, to keep it from flowing over.

This shaving mug measures 3 1/” tall x 6″ long x 2 1/2″ wide. It is in excellent condition.

This antique shaving mug is a unique and wonderful example of shaving history, and a rare find for your collection.
